Login your facebook account
Go to Setting-> Account Setting
Click Notifications
Uncheck the “Sends me a message” or uncheck anything that you don't want to be notified by email for.
Click Save changes.
Lets not avoid the notification rather we can manage the mails from the facebook to reside in one of the different folder in your emailing account so that you are not bothered with the numbers of mails.

Yes Indu, this is not avoid of emails of facebook but offcourse reduces the jamm of mails in inbox as well.
In the social site you are normally connected in to get the information of your social life partners and frens so leaving behind the information might not update you....
