System State Backup & Restore in Windows Server 2008

With new backup feature Windows Server 2008 old good ntbackup has gone. Sadly there is no tape drive backup option in Windows Server 2008. Windows backup now uses keep the backup as vhd file and uses VSS to create block level incremental backup.(Sweet isn’t it!).  Here is a short tutorial on how to perform System State Backup/Restore with new Backup tool.

As mentioned before Windows backup tool is feature should should be installed in server. Installation of Windows Backup can be done by either using GUI which is using Server Manager or by using command.

Performing System state backup:

System state Backup can only be achieved by using wbadmin tool which command line tool.

where is x is drive. Windows backup disk to disk backup solution so we use a drive.

Performing System state restore:

System State restoration can only be done in Directory Service Repair Mode, which can be done by entering Windows Recovery Environment.  Now recovery is tricky part. To restore you need to restore to some sort of version. Every time you take a backup Backup will create a version, we will restore according version.

Fun with PowerShell:Send email

Using PowerShell now you can send email.

You can use Send-Mailmessage Cmdlets to send email. Here a code

send-mailmessage –To recipient@domain –From sender@domain –subject subject        –body “Email Message” –smtpserver yoursmtpserver 

However, if you are in open proxy then you may experience  spamcop . However if you have in premise. Exchange then you can send Email.  In my example i setup local smtp server.

Configuring Live Writer For TechNetNepal.Net

  For starters in Blogging World, here I present a small tutorials on how configure your Windows Live Writer for TechNetnepal.net ‘s Blogs. Windows Live Writer is one of free service given by Microsoft. You may download the Live Installation from here.

When done with installation of Live Writer, start the live Writer. Windows live writer will present you the following screen.

PowerShell (Basics)

Powershell is a administrative engine which is interactive command shell. Its is more of scripting language. It is combination of objects from .NET,COM, and WMI frameworks. Windows PowerShell can be extened with:

  • Providers
  • Cmdlets
  • Scripts,functions,aliases

Cmdlets pronounced Command Lets is light weight used in Windows PowerShell enviroment.

PowerShell Extension:

Administration of Microsoft Product like Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1,SQL 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 now can be done using PowerShell. An example EMS (Exchange Management Shell) now capable of doing all administration in Exchange Server which GUI may not be able to do so. It is just a extension of PowerShell. PSSnapIn is used.

PowerShell Providers:

Using Providers for PowerShell now one can hover around Registry, File System, Certiuficate Store using PowerShell “drives” PSdrive. PSdrive depends open PowerShell providers.

Using PSdrive:

Get-PSdrive to check the list of all current Powershell drives

Accessing Registry

Using push-location with appropriate location of registry

push-location HKCU:

this will change the current path to registry (HKEY_Current_User). Like hover in registry you can use get-childitem to look around and cd to change the path.

Objects::

Objects have interfaces that act like handles to get information into and out of the object. In other words, an object can be more than just a set of data. In addition to interfaces and methods, an object can have properties or attributes that describe it.

Following is an example of changing a user interface with a property assignment:

Use get-member to get the properties and method of any object.

Dot operator

Use (.) operator to access member of an object.

To pass value of one command into other use parenthesis () for this purpose.

Understanding Executable Files:

   “unsafe file type” is concept to protect user from executable content embedded in file. These type of file usually get into user computer via download or mail attachment. Microsoft have declared some file extension as “unsafe file type”. I will try to show some basic on how to handle these type of files.

Usual intention of these type of file is to run Malicious command in user computer. Some of file extension are script files(.vbs, .js) , batch file(.cmd, .bat) or executable command(.exe) .

Potential executable file can some time be threat to one version of Windows whereas no effect to other version. Like gadget introduced from Windows Vista with extension .gadget can be no threat to OS like windows XP since it does not support one.

While Downloading::

When downloading a file you typically get the option to either save or cancel. if you have the application that can open the file then you will get an option to open the download file directly. you will get the Always ask before opening this type of file checkbox option. If you uncheck it you next you download the file, the file is automatically opened for you.

   Attachment Execution Services is the feature included from XP SPK2. It basically keep track of the information in the NTFS file system about the security zone from which the file was downloaded. You can see if a particular file has this zone identifier by right-clicking the file in Windows Explorer and then clicking Properties.

Windows Live Messenger:

You can Customize you Windows live Messenger to Block automatic transfer of potential threat file extension. To block potentially unsafe file types, click Tools, click Options, click File Transfer, and then select the Automatically reject file transfers for known unsafe file types check box.

Online Identity Integration in Windows 7

  Windows 7 gives you facility to share your files and media using using online IDs to identify individuals within the home network. Windows 7 uses Public Key Cryptography User to User PKU2U protocol to authenticate user. Here how to Configure your PC To use Online Integration.

Q: Why are there two versions of WMS – Windows Multipoint Server 2010 and Windows Multipoint Server 2010 Academic? What is the difference between the two?

A: Windows Multipoint Server 2010 is licensed to OEMs for sale on their hardware to customers, while Windows Multipoint Server 2010 Academic is available to Microsoft’s academic volume licensing customers. Windows Multipoint Server 2010 Academic supports Domain Join and does not limit the number of simultaneously connected stations by the host computer (the actual numbers of stations that are simultaneously connected depend on the host computer hardware capacity), whereas Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 does not support Domain Join and is limited by licensing to 10 stations per host computer.

A: Yes, it’s likely, as long as it is a 32-bit application and the ISV doesn’t explicitly exclude server operating system versions. 16-bit applications are not compatible with MultiPoint Server. In some cases, ISVs have different versions of their applications for server operating systems.

Q: What applications do we know are compatible?

A: Microsoft cannot represent compatibility of third-party applications on behalf of independent software vendors, and at this time, no public listing of compatible ISV applications exists for MultiPoint Server.

Q. Is Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 compatible with all third-party applications even though it is based on Windows Server 2008 R2, a 64-bit machine?

A. Most programs designed for 32-bit versions of Windows will work on MultiPoint Server because it is built on Windows Server 2008 R2 that makes use of WOW64 to allow 32-bit applications to run.

Notable exceptions are many third-party antivirus programs. Fortunately, several anti-virus applications do run on MultiPoint Server, including the Forefront Client Security Suite.

Also, device drivers designed for 32-bit versions of Windows won't work so customer's will need 64-bit versions.

The advantage, however, is increased performance from the growing support for 64-bit applications.

 

Windows MultiPoint Solutions

Q: Why is this solution being called “MultiPoint”? Won’t this provide confusion among customers that are already familiar with MultiPoint Mouse SDK?

A: Although both solutions include the MultiPoint brand name and provide the ability for multiple users to access a single host computer, each works in a different manner. MultiPoint Mouse SDK enables multiple users to interact with a single session on a PC using their own mouse. This works well in classroom settings where multiple students can participate in a shared learning activity.

Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 is a host-run operating system that enables multiple users to each run a different application from their own user station simultaneously. Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 allows schools to provide independent computing to more students for the same budget. Teachers can assign and distribute work assignments based on each student’s level and need, or establish a consistent experience, depending on the needs of the class. Students can work on individual projects and at their own pace. And, students can find, use and share information effectively, enhancing their productivity and learning experience. All this can be done within the classroom since Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 was designed for non-technical professionals to set-up and manage the system.

Q: How else has MultiPoint changed since its previous incarnation?

A: The Windows MultiPoint Solutions now consist of:

A: MultiPoint Mouse SDK:

· Educational software developers have the opportunity to develop content that is MultiPoint Mouse SDK enabled today. They simply need to download the SDK to get started.

MultiPoint Server:

· MultiPoint Server brings more computing to students and classrooms around the world—which translates into more opportunity for educational software developers and greater reach for their work.

· If ISVs make their current and/or future educational applications compatible with Remote Desktop Services, their applications can run on WMS. This provides an easy way for ISVs to take advantage of the growing demand for shared resource computing solutions in the education marketplace.

Windows MultiPoint Mouse SDK

Q: Previously, Windows MultiPoint was only offered as a pilot in certain emerging nations.  Is WM Mouse SDK still something intended for classrooms in developing countries or will it now be available everywhere?

A:  The MultiPoint SDK was our first entry into the shared resource computing category over a year ago.  We have now made a new version available – Windows MultiPoint Mouse SDK v. 1.5 which includes various performance improvements making it easier for developers to build applications on the SDK. 

The Windows MultiPoint Mouse SDK is available worldwide for download at www.microsoft.com/multipoint/mouse-sdk.  Any education, casual gaming, or other ISV that would like to develop a product using the SDK can download it free from MSDN. 

Q: Who is using MultiPoint Mouse SDK so far?

A: Numerous ISV’s and education publishers around the world are building applications for their customers on the SDK. Some include: Scholastic Education in the UK, Noviy Disk in Russia, Siveco in Romania, Edurite in India, Eduinnova in Chile, PesonaEdu in Indonesia, Dynabook in Singapore and Malaysia, and BachKim Software in Vietnam.

Q: What is new/different in MultiPoint Mouse SDK 1.5?

A: The SDK 1.5 version is now compatible with Windows 7, Visual Studio 2010, and now supports 64-bit systems, making it easier for developers to use this solution with the latest Microsoft Developer technologies. We have also improved performance of the SDK and added new capabilities making it easier for developers to do things like add cursors and assign custom images.

And for students and teachers, they gain the ability to use the latest Windows technology while continuing to use their favorite MultiPoint apps from our partners.

A: To empower teachers to create their own content that can inspire and excite students, we’ve developed Mouse Mischief—a new, free state-of-the-art MultiPoint-enabled tool that they can use to create interactive PowerPoint classroom presentations.  With Mouse Mischief, students can use affordable, off-the-shelf USB mice as clickers to answer multiple-choice, yes/no, and matching questions – which teachers can insert in their presentations.

Since the intent of Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 is to bring more computing access to classrooms with constrained budgets, the absence of some Windows 7 features ensures that we correctly balance the need for affordable scalability with the final user experience. Q: Why is Microsoft launching this now when you have recently launched Windows 7?

A: We have consistently heard from our education customers that there was a definitive need to provide more students with access to technology for static or shrinking budgets, that there are a great number of non-technical professionals in education that want to bring technology to their students and to integrate technology into the curriculum, but do not have the know-how to do so. And, we heard that education customers want to provide their students with the latest technologies to help prepare them for the workforce. We wanted to do something to address these needs as quickly as possible.

In response, we have developed a new product that illustrates our commitment to give more students access to the great Windows technology that can help them to learn, share, produce, communicate and positively impact their job skills and future employability—Windows MultiPoint Server 2010. Q: Are you concerned that this will cannibalize existing sales of Windows to educational institutions?

Q:  There are solutions in the marketplace today that use Windows XP/Vista as the host OS in a SRC environment.  Why did Microsoft choose to develop a product based on Server vs. Client?  Don’t customers want a lower cost Windows Client solution?

A:  Windows Server was designed from the ground up to provide multi-user capabilities and therefore, will provide users with the best multi-user experience and administrators with the simplest management experience.  Windows Client, and Windows 7 in particular, has been designed for a wide range of users who all enjoy a robust, rich client experience.  Windows 7 comes in different editions with specific features and benefits targeted at addressing the desktop needs and challenges of our global users.

Q: What are the trade-offs between a WMS environment and a Windows Client environment?

A: There are a variety of differences between the WMS and standard Window 7 Client experience:

· In terms of flexibility, the length of the WMS unit USB cord limits the maximum distance each station can be from the host computer. Additionally, there is no local storage or DVD on WMS user stations.

· SRC solutions like WMS are desktop-based and not mobile (like notebooks).

· With WMS, there is a potential decrease in performance as more stations are added and when CPU-intensive work is done on other stations Also, if the host computer is down, user stations cannot connect

· Some Windows 7 features are not available (e.g. Aero, Windows Media Center, Touch, etc.)—Full list below

· Finally, some management and scalability resources are limited in Windows MultiPoint Server*:

Q. Is MultiPoint Server a Windows Server?

Q.  Why should I buy normal RDS instead of MultiPoint?

A.  Multipoint is designed specifically for use in classroom environments and provides up to 10 students access to a single PC hardware with minimal administrator intervention.  Remote Desktop Services provides a domain joined, network based solution to enable server grade hardware to host hundreds of users on a single server with users connecting across the network and as such is designed for organizations with IT professionals and server administrators to manage the environment.

Q. What technology is MultiPoint Server built on?

A. MultiPoint Server 2010 is built on the tested Windows Server platform and also includes specific customization for the target users. It includes the evolution of the multipoint mouse which provided students in a classroom environment, access to their own mouse pointers and helped increase student participation in class room activities. Microsoft takedown Waledac botnet “Operation b49”

Botnet are the backbone for all cyber crime. May it be DOS attack, Spamming. Its just a group of Computer controlled by criminals. Waledac is one of 10 biggest Botnet. Waledac has already spread over hundred and thousand of computer all over the world. It is belived that it has capacity to send over 1.5 billion of spam mail in a day. Microsoft in 18 days has blocked 651 million spam emails attributable to Waledac.

An action was taken to shutdown Waledac. The operation was named “Operation b49”.  Microsoft Cut off the traffic between the to waledac at .com level.

Fake Security Essential 2010 in Circulate

Mimicry of Microsoft Security Essential has been detached across the Internet. This rogue antivirus report false detection to convince user to upgrade their existing trial version to full version. Microsoft says this is due to Trojan:Win32/Fakeinit .

This fake AV get installed by Win32/fakeinit.

The secret Behind the God Mode is simple. Windows signs certain folder with unique string which is Windows Class Identifiers. This has been since Windows Vista , I am not sure of XP or older version of OS.  These specific folder can be found on Registry . Here is snap shot.
