Rumor on the market started to come that Microsoft has started to work on successor of Windows 7 under the code name Windows 8. Here in this thread let us discuss and contribute what should we like to see in newer version of windows client operating system. So the dreams of our on how it should be look like may come true.

Thank you.

I would like to see windows 8 be able to bring together all the storage that I have (c drive harddisk, my DVD Drive, my USD drive, my USB external hdd drive) and bring all the data to one place rather than by drive names of c: D: so that I have easier access to the media that I have.

My wish list is also to be able to be able to run my desktop OS as an extension of my Windows Mobile OS and be able to control the desktop remotely from my mobile, eg. to make it go to hibernation mode, wake it up from sleep and also to be able to control my presentation by reading the presenter view on my WinMo and be able to project from my laptop.

My wish list for the next Windows OS is to have more grid computing built in so that the 4 computers that I have in my home, I would be able to aggregate the processor power to give me much more power when I am doing any proc-heavy stuff.

I wish my OS to give me the functionality to do gestures movement being understood by the webcam so that simple functions of the computer can be interfaced with gestures rather than using multitouch, keyboards, mouse, digital ink or speech.

I think it should also bring into itself functionalities of the Surface interface so that I would be able to detach the monitor from my laptop and put it on my desktop and use it as surface rather than just a tablet.

I also wish my mouse and keyboard would also give me jolt, vibration and hummms to give me feedback as I either make mistakes or there is other activities going on in the monitor, so that I do not always have to rely on the monitor for feedback fromn the computer, the vibration from the keyboard or the mouse would also tell me of various activities going on in the computer

Yes, something like "/" in unix. Unix and other unix like systems (linux, bsd) have been doing this since the dinosaur era.

My this year project was to control Desktop from the mobile phone using mobile phone. I coded in java and hence it supports not only windows machine, it supports other phones and desktops too. It currently uses Bluetooth, but unfortunately it is not very compatible in Windows 7 and Vista. Not that I could not absolutely run it, but because of non-open standards and Microsoft's non-standard implementation, Bluecove does not fully support them so advanced features which might have been implemented are sacrificed for interoperability.

So, basically I would like Microsoft to follow open standards than developers having to sacrifice functionalities that would have been possible without sacrificing platform independence.

Linux.

This one is being covered by one of my friends. He has been working on Gesture recognition using camera in Java. However, due to the same interoperability issues, he was unable to support all operating systems using the same code. Since he also wished to make his system platform independent (for obvious reasons), he had to code differently for Linux and Windows.

Also, some hardware manufacturers have to build their hardware compatible with Microsoft Windows (for better marketability) and they have to discard other operating systems to bit into the competent market.

Again, Microsoft should follow open standards and make their implementations standards complaint so that hardware manufacturers must not worry much.

That should be implemented on the hardware end first.

BTW, I knew about the changes that would come into my next OS (Ubuntu Lucid Lynx) from the very beginning. I even downloaded the daily builds and have been contributing with suggestions and bug reports from the very beginning. I am currently using Alpha version of Lucid and can know about the changes happening everyday.

Irelevent Posting. Topic is "What should be windows 8 looks like?" Be in track. BTW why is there comparision between the two different Plateform? I don't think it is necessary to compare two extreme things.

^First, it is relevant.. since you are talking about next version of "your OS", I'm talking about mine. Don't forget, Ubuntu is also a very popular Desktop Operating System.

Second, they are not "two extreme things". Both are Desktop Operating Systems. Both are capable of running on x86 and x64 systems (well, linux can run on more processors and hardware, but discussing about that would be out of topic). I can do almost everything with my operating system you are capable of doing with yours, sometimes a lot more easily than you can imagine.

Maybe I should start following your signature and stop the discussion here, but I am into thinking that "if an idiotic discussion can help the idiot, it is worth a try".

:D

Windows 8 gonna demand high confuguration of hardware as well. Low configuration computers may not workout.

I pity you. You should keep up with the technology. :D

So, should I open a new discussion about Ubuntu?

The discussion does not fit there. Well, I will think about it.

The least I want in an OS is Office, Browser, Media Players, download managers, torrent clients, pdf-readers/editors and most drivers available by default.

Additional applications easily installable using a Software Manager, so that I don't need to search on the internet, download and install using a Next-Next interface that bugs me with so many options and unnecessary configurations. Software upgrades should be maintained by the package manager and such repository system should be enforced for the software providers.

Small harddisk usage. I can't dedicate all my space for applications.

Easy integration/data exchange with other applications, older versions of the OS/applications.

Open Standards compliant so that I can take data anywhere on any similar systems and it should work without much hassle.

Open API and cross-compatible development environment.

Justifiable cost of software. I can't pay more for OS+Office more than I do for my hardware itself.
