hey ITpros,

Can somebody elaborate on IPv6 , because i heard only abour IPv4 in windows server 2003. This seems to be a new and cool feature of windows server 2008.

Also what's dual IP layer architecture in windows server 2008?

Thanks and regards,

@Spandan,

I am yet to study networking in my college curriculum, so I may not be that accurate in answering your query right now, but at least I can help you with some idea.

IPV4 uses 32 bits IP address, and with the increasing number of internet users today, the public IPs are slowly being exhausted in the world. Taking this concern in mind, IPV6 was introduced, which uses 128 bit IP address.

As the no. of public IP addresses available depends upon the no of distinct IPs that can be created from 128 bits, the no. of available IPs is really huge with IPV6. It's said that with IPV6, the no of IPs available is comparable to the no of ants in this world. (You can imagine).

I think a day will come when every 'non-stand alone' electronic devices will use IP addresses for their identification and communication and IPV6 will make it possible..( Remember Internet Call to  US is cheaper than ISD to India?)

Yes Samant, as you mentioned before... there are unsufficient addresses in IPv4 now in present world . As demand of addresses are rapidly increasing. IPv6 will fullfill the abundant addresses of demands in future world also.

       Number of IPv4 Addresses: 4,294,967,296 (32 bits)

       Population of Earth (2006): 6,547,251,903

       Number of IPv6 Addresses: 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431, 768,211,456 (128 bits),

this might not only for no. of ants but, can also include every living creatures in this world.... hehe. (We can imagine). :P
